The Finer Points of Video
Your DENsi application video was intentionally designed to be very simple and focus on your story. Yet video can provide deeper and stronger connections to viewers when effectively utilizing various techniques and layers. This session will allow you to explore various techniques of video including cut aways, audio, split screens and other techniques that take your video to a new level. This session will primarily use iMovie but other software can be used as well.

You don't have to use your DENSi application video but we'll use that as a model. If you have other videos you'd like to touch up and develop more, we can work with that. This session will be hands on and work time.

Show and Tell, 21st Century Style
All students have a story to tell. Through telling their story, students feel empowered - they gain a better understanding of themselves and their heritage, their background and their culture.
The rules of traditional "show and tell" are no longer (or should be no longer). Gone are the days when a student brings in just one object to describe themselves. Let's encourage students to harness the power of technology to share about themselves and accomplish a 21st century show and tell.

Lesson ideas from this session: Pecha Kucha presentations, trading cards, and student-created superheroes
Highlighted resources for this session: DE Social Studies Techbook, Wolfram Alpha, trading card generators, Sketchup and Haiku Deck

Director of Assessment, Discovery Education
My passion is asking questions, to continually ask 'why?', 'how?', and 'what if?'. To me, the goal of learning isn't as much about getting students to answer challenging questions as it is enabling them to ask them. Igniting a student's passion and curiosity enables them not only to learn, but to re-learn for a lifetime. As Sir Ken Robinson has said, passion is "whatever fires your imagination and stokes your energy". While I embrace the charge... Read More →

Learning To Speak Android
Having the ability to speak more than one language in today's world is essential for success.  It's not just English, Spanish, etc.  It's iOS and Android!  Join me as I detail my adventures in learning how to speak Android!   You'll learn how the two operating systems differ, yet remain quite similar.  You'll explore apps that can be used on both platforms, and some of the unique aspects to both.  In the end, you'll realize that speaking two languages is a wonderful skill to possess.  So join me and learn how to speak Android!

Many people who live in the iOS world like to stay there.  The thought of moving to another world is not only scary, but some might consider crazy.  iOS, after all, is intuitive, easy to adapt, and seemingly prevalent in the world of education.  The idea of learning a new OS language creates a new and possibly frustrating learning curve.     This presentation will explore how quickly one can learn to speak Android when coming from an iOS world.  That is, how does on become bilingual?  What steps need to be taken?  Which device or devices should one look at to learn this new language?  And, how does the integration of the Android language in the classroom differ from that of the iOS classroom world?  As with the learning of iOS, the learning of the Android language is a process that can easily be acquired.    During this presentation participants will have the opportunity to explore both operating systems and their respective application market places.  Participants will become knowledgeable about how to acquire Android skills, and how to really understand the differences between the two operating systems.  The presentation of apps from both platforms will be incorporated, including a listing of apps that are friendly to both iOS and Android.    In the end, participants will learn that if you're fluent in the language of iOS, you can easily become fluent in the Android language as well.

Igniting a student's passion and curiosity enables them not only to learn, but to re-learn for a lifetime. Every student has a camera in their pocket and easy access to video tools that rival professional movie studios. The question becomes, how do we leverage such tools in the classroom? We will explore non-traditional ways to harness the power of digital storytelling to tap into student creativity throughout the curriculum. By analyzing popular 'viral' videos, we will assess what draws us to them, how they were created, and how educators can replicate those same principles and ideas using Discovery Education videos and free websites.

Blend the "Traditional" art form of storytelling through puppetry with it's digital counterpart "Digital Storytelling,"  AKA: "Tra-Digital Storytelling."  Not every child wants to be on camera but would gladly tell a story using a puppet if given the opportunity.
